Re: Using SMS 2003 to deploy software

If you're familiar with GPO software instalation, you assign software to a
set of computers, and the software is instaled when the server is rebooted
and before the GINA is available for anyone to logon. Installing software
happens during the application of policies.
As Jeff said, you can NOT advertise applications to users on TS. If you
need to do this, then you should use Softricity, which will likely be rolled
into the next rev of SMS since MSFT purchased them.

I'm not familiar with the nomenclature anymore of SMS but the installation.
to the server must be done without client intervention. In other words, the
package must sent and installed without a user having to choose it. For
example, you want an office upgrade installed, you schedule it for midnight,
then at midnight the update is installed. The users will never see this and
shouldn't. What your describing is exactly what TS does and it works the
same way with pushing applications through AD.
I'm not sure on yoru comment on security/config with ICA vs RDP. It makes
no difference whether the user comes in through ICA or RDP when installing
applications, the effects are the same and just because they come in through
ICA doesn't prevent the user from installingn apps.
Again, you can deploy applications through SMS but you cannot publish them
to users (or in other words for users to choose to install or run from the
add/remove programs).

Thank you Jeff,
Perhaps I should clarify why I configured one advertisement to allow users
to install independantly from the mandatory assignment.
All of the advertisments are set (except for one on a server outside the
CITRIX farm) to mandatory assignments per machine collections.
Advertisments
are not set on a user groups basis. No advertisements run on the terminal
servers without regard to mandatory/non-mandatory assignment. In hopes of
determining if the SMS client even "saw" that there are advertisements
available from its Management point, I allowed one advertisment to be
available at a user's request. This is how I came across the message
regarding programs not being available when running in application mode.
Because no users can terminal into the servers using RDP (Applications are
published VIA Citrix Presentation Server), this test does not pose a
secuity/configuration issue.
Without regard to the configuration of the above mentioned, servers
running
Terminal Server in applicaiton mode do not run SMS advertisments.
So I am wondering if
a. this is normal behavior.
b. If anyone has experience with this type of configuration (Using SMS to
deploy software to Terminal Servers).

You must push software instalaltions to install, you cannot have users

terminal
servers would be in horrific shape. Users would completely overwrite
each
others settings whenever a user installed a piece of software.
So to try to make a little more sense. you can schedule software
installations (and please do yourself a favor and schedule them when
users
are not on the system) but you cannot publish applications to the users
to
choose to install or not install through add/remove programs. In fact,
users shouldn't have access to add/remove programs at all.

Our organization would like to use SMS 2003 to manage application
deployments
to Citrix Server (which run the terminal server). I have noticed that
there
advertisments for software do not appear for these servers. Upon
logging
into the server and checking for new programs, the message " this
server
is
running under application mode, no programs will be available' is
displayed.
Does anyone have any tips on how to integrate SMS 2003 software
deployments
to terminal servers?
