Re: Using WinXP Pro w/SP2 as a workstation

Currently I'm in the stage of doing two Proofs of Concept. The first
proof was using Linux as a workstation. The second proof is using
WinXP as the workstation. Why XP? Our company already has the
licenses for the use of that particular OS.

Here's the current situation. A majority of the users need to use a
terminal emulator to access a telnet session for their work. Whoever
was the prior IT guy to me just simply gave each of those users
administrative access to their local box so that they could access this
terminal emulator. As most of you know... that's a VERY bad thing to
do with people who are rather ignorant of security. I've been quickly
learning that the job description of IT is to save the business from
itself. What makes this worse, is that there are three dealerships
that have to connect to this central network to do their daily backups,
access this telent session, and a few other small things. They are all
connected through a VPN tunnel. I've been a bit worried that one of
these days, one of these users is going to open up an attachment,
download some cute program, etc. In the process of doing so, they very
well could be opening up a nice trojan, or some other sort of malicious
code and end up making more grief for me and more grief for the
company.

This is why I want to scale them back down to a "thin" client solution.
I want to go the route of using Linux as a workstation. My proof of
concept proved that the end user could still do all they had to, but at
a greater security to themselves and to the network. I do however,
have to have a proof of concept for the WinXP solution merely because
we already have the licenses for the OS.
