Re: Rebuilding a license server

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

You're correct in both assumptions:
the site with only W2K Pro and XP Pro clients shouldn't give you
any problems, just install and activate the TS Licensing Server.

At the site with the Winxx clients and purchased TS CALs, you have
to phone the Clearinghouse to get your licenses re-issued. Backup
and restore doesn't work when you reinstall the OS from scratch.
From what I have read here, that shouldn't be a time consuming call
at all, provided that you can find the paperwork with the license
numbers / volume license agreement.

Hi

I have two Win2000 servers to rebuild (virus infected, AD
screwed up) next week, overseas, one day each. Both completely
seperate sites and not connected or related in any way. Both
machines are AD domain controllers, but only a small AD so I'm
just going to rebuild that manually. But, both machines are TS
Licensing servers.

I'm pretty sure that all the client workstations at one of the
sites are Win2k Pro or XP Pro, so I can just activate a new
license server I think?

But, the other site has Win98 clients and therefore has licenses
installed on the machine I'm going to rebuild. Is there a way
I can back these up before I wipe the machine? I fear not, and
predict a long phone call to Microsoft Clearing House?

Any advice or pointers greatly appreciated.
