Barcode Scanner on Client Com port

I have several Windows CE 4.2 .NET Terminal Services Clients running a Win32
application very happily on a Windows 2003 Server.
I now have a need to add a barcode scanner attached to COM1 on each of the
Clients. Communications are one way only (from the scanner on the slient to
the server application) so there does not need to be any device physically
attached to Com1 on the server.
The application on the server which the clients all run assumes that the
barcode scanner is attached to COM1, and the one instance runs fine on the
server.
I have configured the client to 'connect automatically to the local serial
ports when logged on to the remote computer' and port redirection is enabled
within the servers terminal services configuration (by default).
But the application does not receive the data from the barcode scanner on
the client.
Do I need to map Com1 on the client to Com1 on the server? If so how?
Can several clients all use the same application on the server that opens
Com1 ? I.e. is there a virtual Com1 for each client session?
I suspect (hope) that I have missed something simple here and confused
myself so any help is welcome.
