Stuck in Selection Mode

I am running the terminal services plug-in to MMC to access several remote
computers.

Regardless of the application that I run on any remote computers, any editor
acts as if the shift key is down when I press any arrow key. When an arrow
key is pressed, the editor selects all the text from the original edit
position to the new edit position. I would like to be able to use the arrow
keys to simply navigate the document, not select text unless, of course, I am
actually also pressing the <shift> key.
