For archive completeness, I have been able to successfully set up an HP
Laserjet 1015 with Terminal services and remote desktop. It is a USB
Printer with a port that begins in 'DOT', so I had to modify the
registry on the client computer (windows XP) as detailed at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302361

I installed the HP supplied driver on the client PC. On the server I
added an HP Laserjet 4 and used the native Windows Server 2003 driver of
the same name and mapped this to the port 'TS002' (you need to
experiment to find out which port is the correct one, as when the
registry patch above is applied, all ports get mapped over from the
client even if there is nothing attached to them).

Another thing to note is that while I was playing around with all these
settings, at some point I began to experience VERY slow remote desktop
logoff times, in the vicinity of 5 minutes. This is a known issue
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828326) and there is a hotfix
available for it, unfortunately you have to phone up microsoft to obtain
it. Once I applied the hotfix and rebooted the server the problem was
resolved.
