Re: 2.nd NTPserver?

Hello Towli,

As said before member servs synz with one available DC. Make sure the windows time service is running and configure it for a test in one switch/router.

Thanks again.
We, in the networking dept., were asked to setup our Dhcp-server
(which is
the only server under our control) as an Ntp-server (and as i told
make it
syncronize with the Pdc). Is this possible?
Is it bad advice?

Hello Towli,

As long as the 'Windows Time' service is running it should work. Also
port 123 UDP has to be open when using firewall's in between.

Thank you very much Meinolf.
We have other DC's running, can i assume that they are acting as
NTP-servers
as per default, or do i have to ask the server admins to activate
this
somehow?

Hello Towli,

In a domain the PDCEmulator is the one and only time source. All
other DC's sync with it and member servers and workstations sync
with just one available DC.

So if you just need a different server to point your switches to
you can choose another DC, because the time is the same as on the
PDCEmulator.

Also the PDCEmulator should sync either with an external timesource
or it's internal hardware clock, so you can also use the same
external time server for your switches to have the same time as the
PDCEmulator, ofcourse if you change the external time source you
have to change on all switches etc.

Best regards

Hello all

Our PDC is acting as NTP-server in our domain. I have been asked
to setup another NTP-server which should synchronise with the PDC
and then serve as NTP-server for all our networking-gear
-switches, routers, firewalls (for reason unexplained we can not
use the PDC). Can this be done? can you run 2 NTP servers on the
same network? If so how can it be done? What is best practise?

Best regards from Denmark
/Towli
