Re: Do I need a 64 bit system to run 8 gig memory for VMware.

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hello Roger,

For good performance of VM's also a good processor is needed, especially if you run more then one VM. If you use server 2003 Enterprise edition this will also handle the 8GB RAM.

I have a Windows 2003 Server running on my old computer - a Pentium IV
2200 with 1 gig of memory. I use it to run VMWare Workstation to
allow me to simulate a WIndows Domain for training purposes. The
system just blew a mboard, and I need t o upgrade the unit. Further,
when I was running four virtual Windows systems, the system crawled.

Looking at a new desktop Intel Mboard and CPU, I have a few questions
please.

1. For running VMware Workstation 6, will a quad core CPU offer
significantly better performance than a Core Duo? The Quad is running
around $300, and the Duo is $189. If I can save the cash, I’d prefer
to.

2. The Intel Mboard will support 8 gig of memory at not too expensive
prices. I heard though that 32 bit Windows will only deal with 4 gig.
Would I need to buy a 64 bit CPU and motherboard, and a 64 bit version
of VMware Workstation 6 to have this app use the 8 gig (I know that I
would need to use 64 bit Windows Server 2003)? If so, does a 64 bit
CPU / Mboard combo also require special PCI or PCI express cards or
can I use the ones from my old system?

Thanks
Rog
