Dear Meinolf Weber,

Sorry about the confusion. I'll be getting rid of the old OS.

Thanks for all of your help,
JeffH

Hello JeffH,

If you remove the server from the domain you will loose the permissions,
so just rename it, then also the name in AD should be changed. Make sure
that also DNS has the new name in all zones and that replication occurs to
any DC. After that you can install the new server with the old name and copy
your data. Well, if you not need the server i would either remove it or upgrade
it to 2003. Why will you keep this old not supported OS?

Best regards

Hello Meinolf Weber,

I was thinking about renaming the existing NT4 SP 6a server and
rejoining it to my domain. Then removing the old name and create the
new system. At that point I am going to use Robocopy to copy the
files and the respective permissions to the newer hardware that has
Server 2003 SP2 on it. It will remain a member server within my
domain.

Thank again,
JeffH

Hello JeffH,

IS the NT4 SP3 machine domain member or standalone? If you will keep
using it and have the new server with the same name, it will not
work, 2 machines with the same name is a not allowed configuration.
Also for NT4 is the latest SP 6a. What

For the 2003 machines i recommend to use SP2 and also all other
patches after that.

Best regards

Hi Meinolf Weber,

I'm taking SourceSafe on an NT4 SP3 server and bringing it up to
Server 2003 SP1 or 2, probably 2. This server will continue to act
as a member server. I have 2 domain controllers within my 240
workstation Active Directory 2003 environment.

Thanks,
JeffH

Hello JeffH,

We need more information about the server to replcace and also the
domain setup. What OS and SP are you using? Is the server domain
controller or member server? How many Domain controllers do you
have? For sourcesafe, check there webpage for support on replacing.

Best regards

Hi,

I have a single domain environment. Can I take my old server out
of my domain and replace it with new hardware while still calling
the new server the same name as the old server? This server run
SourceSafe on it, so it's a file server.

Thanks in advance,
JeffH
