Re: took lightning hit - server 2003 bootup errors

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Dave,

after googling for this error, I am now thinking it was not a power surge.
Though our building did lose power, no other machines were damaged, simply
required rebooting.. All our computers have battery backups, and in reading
about this iaStor.sys error, which by the way involves the SCSI or SATA
driver, it is not an uncommon problem, though as of yet, I have been unable
to find a solution... I'm still looking though.

I was able to do a search and found four different copies of the iaStor.sys
file on the computer, all are the same size, same dates, same version...
and I copied the one from the i386 folder figuring it was the original
file... but it still does the same thing on reboot, though I was able one
time out of about the last 10 reboots where it actually booted to windows...
said it had recovered from a serious error and I sent the info to MS... got
back a link to a KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835166, this
article states that it may have been the result of faulty hotfix, but that
particular fix was not listed in the Add/Remove Programs list..... and on
the next reboot it reverted to the same behavior as before.

This is a gateway computer and I have sent email to their tech support, but
have yet to hear back... I did download the latest drivers: 9532416.exe -
E-9220T SATA RAID Driver but, it doesn't install quite like the XP drivers
and I'm a bit leary about messing it up even more. This driver is a few
months newer(8/2005) than what came with the O/S (5/2005).

I was able to boot up successfully into Safe Mode with Networking, and can
get online with it... but I'm waiting now to hear back from the tech support
people.

I was chastised for not including the entire error message here, but it
didn't stay on the screen long enough for me to copy it... I tried hitting
the Pause key to freeze the screen like during bootup, but it didn't work...
Is there a log file I could look at that would give me that information?
If so, where? I'm only at the school 3 days a week for 3 hours a day.. so
time is at a premium.

Obviously I don't know this O/S very well at all... and though I do try to
learn a bit here and there, I do have other requirements on my time to deal
with, things that I do know how to do... so I come and ask for help and
hope that some of the wisdom will be absorbed and I am able to make at least
some progress in my understanding while trying to solve the problem at hand.

I appreciate any responses that help further my knowledge and hopefully help
with the current problem,

thanks,
niteowl

after a lightning hit or surge if it got through your power protection the
machine is questionable. driver irql errors like that can be from damaged
memory, device controllers, etc. if you got into safe mode copy off
whatever you can get to backup media and hope that its intact, then
restore to a new box... i wouldn't trust a lightning struck box for
anything more than a game machine for the kiddies.

Hi all,

I'm the volunteer IT guy at a small middle school, we must have taken a
power surge over the weekend sometime...

I have a Server2003 computer.. that will bootup, get to the desktop, then
crash...

I have only been able to see parts of the screen message,

the top says: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

then a bunch of stuff about if this is the first time you've seen this,
blah blah blah......

and at the bottom: something about IASTOR.SYS

then it does a memory dump and reboots....

when I left it yesterday, it was waiting for a password to signon to
windows...

I was able to get it into Safe Mode, and being an XP guy... looked for a
restore feature of some kind, but coudn't find it... so I really don't
know what else to do at this point...

I had help installing the operating system and till now it's worked
perfectly. (2 yrs)....

Any help or things to try to 'fix' it would be appreciated.. otherwise I
guess I'll call someone else in.

thanks in advance,

niteowl
