Hello boe,
To install a 2008 DC in a 2003 domain the schema has to be upgraded to version 44. The schema is the same in your complete domain, the schema upgrade will add additional AD objects which are needed for 2008.
2000, 2003 and 2008 DC's can coexist on a domain without any problem.
You have to rely on the Forest and domain functional level's for getting all functionalities of 2008. See here about the differences about FFL and DFL in the different scenarios:

Actually - I'd like to make sure I understand this as well. I am
just playing with 2008 for the first time now in a non production
environment but it looks to me like if I set it up as a DC and use the
2008 ad schema instead of setting it up as a 2003 AD server I need all
my other servers to actually be 2008 servers to act as DCs along with
the new 2008 server - is that correct or can I upgrade the schema on
2003 servers to be 2008 AD?

Hello tom_tom88,
It runs without any problem in a 2003 domain. If you will install
DC's you have to upgrade3 the schema, for member servers not needed.

Hi, Yes I understand the licensing aspect and have licenses for 2008
server and TS clients, as well as 2003 versions. I was asking a
setup/intsall question as to whether i would be able to install and
integrate the 2008 server into our 2003 domain or would it be better
to install 2003 and upgrade later.

Hello tom_tom88,
2008 you can downgrade to 2003, that shouldn't be a problem. For TS
licensing you have to contact MS or your vendor because you need
new licenses for 2008 as far as i know.

We have a Server 2003 Domain, with 3 servers running Exchange 2003
and IIS and have just purchased a new server for a new requirement
of about 30 TS clients to access an application on one of the 2003
boxes. Question is do i install Server 2008 with TS 2008 or stick
with 2003. I dont want to have to do an upgrade when we migrate if
its best to install 2008 now.
