is put in the first R2 disk and choose "upgrade".

The first disk of the R2 set is Win 2k3 SP1. The second disk of the R2 set
is the new R2 features.

If you were upgrading from Win 2k SP4 you would put in the first Disk of the
R2 set (after running adprep on your Win 2k schema master to prepare the
domain for Win 2k3) and run setup. This would upgrade the Win 2k SP4 server
to Win 2k3 SP1. After the final reboot it would then request the second disk
of the R2 set and you have the choice to install the second disk or not.
Best practice is to only install the services on a server that are needed.
If you don't need any of the new R2 features on the server don't install
them.

If your server is already Win 2k3 SP1, there is no need to use the first
disk of the R2 set. If this server is one server that you want to use the
new R2 features on you would put in the second disk of the R2 set and run
setup2 to install the new R2 features.

Example, you want to use the new DFSR features on two of say ten servers in
a win 2k3 domain with all servers already running SP1. You would run adprep
on the schema master for the existing domain using the second disk of the R2
set to prepare the domain for the new R2 features. Then you would install
the R2 features on the two servers you want to use the new R2 replication
features on by running setup2 from the second disk of the R2 set on ONLY
those two servers.

danny,

again, thanks. have you seen this:

http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/9015ae87-dff0-4291-9079-98a6e8e567b11033.mspx?mfr=true

i find it a little misleading. it sure makes it sound like all i have to
do
is put in the first R2 disk and choose "upgrade". is that because it's
not
addressing the issue of domain controller in that particular article?

It will be on the second disk of the R2 set.

To update a Win 2k3 SP 1 server to R2 you first need to run adprep on
the
schema master for the domain to prepare the domain for the R2
features,
then
run setup2 from the second disk of the R2 set. R2 contains some
updated
features (such as DFSR) You would install those updated features
(running
setup2) on the individual servers that you want to use those updated
features on.

sp2.

You can down load SP2 from the Windows update site. Sp2 really has
nothing
to do with R2.

i have a 2k3 sp1 std server that i'd like to upgrade to server 2k3
std
r2
sp2. it's a dc and runs exchange 2k3 sp2.

is the upgrade as simple as running the setup.exe off disk 1?
that's
what
i
seem to be reading, but i've got it in my head that upgrading
servers
can't
be that simple.

thanking all replies in advance ...
