Re: Server 2003 SP Installation Failure

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Look for errors in %systemroot%\Svcpack.log file. You might try downloading and installing.

More than likely some objects were in use preventing a successful install. I don't think installing SQL Server on a DC is recommended.

I have quite a problem!!! I attempted to install Windows updates today on a
customer's Server 2003 Standard machine which included Windows 2003 SP1.
About midway through the installation I got a message that certain files were
not accessible and the Service Pack installation stopped and began to remove
itself. Before the uninstallation fully completed a terrible message
appeared that said that the operating system had only partially been updated
and that Windows Server 2003 may not function properly. It then asked me to
reboot the system which I did not do since for the moment I still have access
to the system and would like to salvage as much information as I can in case
the system crashes when we try to reboot it.

I would like to know if there are any log files created during a SP1
installation that may tell me what files were inaccessible thus causing the
failed installation. Second I would like to know if an Active Directory
backup may still be performed at this point and still be usable to restore
from should the OS have to be reinstalled.

Details about the system:
HP Proliant G3 Xeon
2.25 GB RAM
RAID 5 Array
C: Partition (OS and a few apps that must be installed to the system
partition)
D: Partition (Data and Apps that can be installed to non-system partition)
Windows Server 2003 Standard
Active Directory Domain Contoller (Only domain controller on network)
MSSQL 2000 Server

For the time being everything still appears to be working correctly. The
GUI is responsive to all requests, AD is available and workstations can login
and function, file sharing is available and working, printers are available
and printing, SQL is serving. But I keep getting the message asking me to
reboot now or later and I am not willing to allow the system to reboot
without backing up as much as possible. All data files that I know of have
been backed up to an external Hard Drive NAS (File Replication) and to Tape
(Veritas BE9).

I would really appeciate any help that anyone can provide. I do understand
that this system installation probably will not be salvageable but I sure
would like to try. This customer is a 6 day a week 24 hour operation that is
dependant on the software served by this computer.

Thanks,

Brian
