-Network topology

I have 7 computers (c1-7) with Windows XP pro installed on them. Each
computer is connected to 10/100 switch. The switch is connected to a
1500/256 ADSL router

-Usage

The main uses for the computer network include MS Schedule, MS Word, MS
outlook express... There are two MS schedule files on a single computer
(c1) within a shared folder. c2-c7 run MS schedule and access the MS
Schedule files on c1 across the network MS Word documents are also
stored on c1 within a shared folder. C2-c7 access the MS Word documents
across the network (mapped drives). MS outlook connects to a pop3
server hosted off site. All *.dbx files and contacts are stored locally
on each machine.

QUES1 It takes about three seconds to list the contents inside the
shared folder where all the MS Word docs are. I think this is because
there are 50 folders within the shared folder. Within each folder there
are 10 word docs. Is there anyway to speed up the listing of the
folder??

Probably not. But there are so many things that can affect speed there is no
way to tell here.

-Backup

The person on c1 manually backups the two shared folders containing the
MS Schedule and MS word files using the built-in cd writing software
on Windows Xp. No dbx files or contacts on each machine are backed
up!!!!!!!!!!

Uh... start backing up the dbx files? Ad the the backup.

QUES 2 How do I set the network up so all files including dbx's and
contacts are backed up?

Inlclude them in your existing backup.

Do I change the user profile paths on c2-c7 so
their profiles are stored on c1, then just backing up the profiles on
c1?? Will this slow logon times down? Is this even possible? What are
the pros and cons of this?

IMO, profiles are not worth backing up. However, in order to move them to a
central location I believe you will need Windows Server.

-Security

Each machine runs antivirus software and windows automatic updates.
Each user logs in with Administrative privileges on each machine!!!
Without passwords!!!!! Both shares on c1 are not pass worded!!!!! I
pretty much know I have to assign passwords and "user" privileges
to accounts used everyday on each machine. I also know I have to
password shares on c1. The problem lies in the fact when staffs want to
access the shared folders across the network they will be prompted for
a password for that shared folder

Create a user account (not admin) on each and every machine for each and
every user with the exact same password. Assign privileges for them to use
the share. They will be able to connect to all shares and never be prompted
for a password.

QUES3. How do I get around this???

See above.

I can recall something about a net
use cmd??

That could be used to automate the drive mapping. Or, you could just rely on
the "reconnect at next logon" checkmark in the user profile.

How do I incorporate this into a script?

Write standard OS commands to map drives into a batch file and place the
batch file into each users startup directory (well, that's one way).

And where is the
option to run scripts at start up in windows????

If you mean to automatically run scripts located on a server, you would need
a Windows Server configured as a domain controller to do this.
