the media and the key. For example, a retail CD cannot be used with a VLP
key. So it depends on your Media and Key. An oem media if i'm not wrong is
known to be a retail media and you need a retail key for this.
You can try using the Windows Activation screen to enter a new key and give
it a try. Otherwise, you're probably looking at wiping out the machine.
Unless someone here is able to share with us some information on how to set
new keys even if the keys ain't compatible with the media.
2) If simple activation is not possible, is it possible to upgrade this
existing server from SP1 to R2 using the new media and avoid having to
reinstall the OS from scratch?
SP1 to R2 isn't exactly an upgrade. R2 is an add-on. If you're currently
running SP1, you can pop in the second CD of the R2 set and load up the
installation. It'll convert your installation keys to whatever your R2 is.
Your R2 set, CD1 is actually W2k3 with SP1 while CD2 is R2.

I have some basic questions about license activation for Windows Server
2003.
We recently installed Windows Server 2003 SP1 Standard Edition onto a
clean
system using OEM media from another server and we have now purchased a
full
package of Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. From reading some of
the
posts on this newsgroup, it sounds like this was not a good thing to do,
but
we were in a hurry to install the server OS and we grabbed the media that
was
available at the time. My questions are these:
1) Is it possible to enter the product key from the newly purchased
Windows
Server 2003 media into the 'Activate Windows' dialog in order to activate
the
currently installed software or are we looking at having to do a clean
wipe
and reinstall using the new media?
2) If simple activation is not possible, is it possible to upgrade this
existing server from SP1 to R2 using the new media and avoid having to
reinstall the OS from scratch?
3) Are there any other viable alternatives?
We have another 10 days to activate the current software and we are trying
to be prepared for what we need to do to get this server fully licensed
and
operational.
Thanks very much for your help.
