Setup with greater than 4 GB RAM and Win2K3w/SP1

We have several models of Dell Power Edger Servers: PE 2650, PE 6650, and
PE 2850. The servers have varying amounts of RAM, from 4 GB to 16 GB.
I install all latest BIOS and firmware upgrades to these servers, then,
install a slipstreamed Win2K3ENTw/SP1 to them. In the Boot.ini, I have and
have not put the "/PAE" switch, and, for those servers running SQL2K, the
"/3GB" switch.
I'm getting a wide variety of being able to "see" the extra RAM, and, in
being able to make a larger (than 4 GB) Paging File.
In the PE 2650 and 6650, I HAVE to use the /PAE switch to see the extra RAM,
but, in the 2650, I cannot make the Paging File greater than 4 GB, but, in
the 6650, I have a 24 GB Paging File (but, it will not create in one
contiguous file, and, is broken in 2).
In the PE 2850, I do NOT have the /PAE switch, can see the RAM, and, the
paging file is at 16 GB, in one contiguous section.
Is there any rhyme or reason to all this? Should I just use the /PAE
switch, anyway?
Thanks.
