Re: Server 2003 on older machine

It just so happens that my wife has an old workstation that has a 3c905
installed that I *ahem* borrowed to test this. I started SBS 2003 setup
from stratch and it detected it as an "Ethernet Card" but didn't install
drivers for it.

Rick,
one really easy fix is to get a 3com 3c905 PCI card from
ebay for about $10. Remove the old NIC, replace with the 3c905,
and reboot. Win2k3 and win2000 servers (every version I've used)
automatically detect and load correct drivers for that card
good luck

I have an older workstation that I would like to setup to run Server 2003
and Exchange 2003 to use on a very small network mostly for my wife and I
to be able to see each other's calendars and contacts and for me to be
able to see my email/calendar while out and about with my laptop. (Also,
I'm hoping to learn lots about managing Win2003 and Exch2003!) All the
hardware that was on the system is supported by Server 2003 natively or
via downloads from manufacturors' websites with the exception of the
wireless ethernet adapter that was being used with XP Pro before. I
replaced that adapter with a new D-Link DFE-530TX+ (it comes with 2003
drivers).
My problem:
Server installs fine with no hangups at all. It recognizes the NIC, but
does not install correct drivers. I run the setup from the CD and it
reboots the machine. After reboot, it has the dreaded yellow exclamation
point on the NIC. In device manager, it gives me this message "the
device is not working properly because windows cannot load the required
drivers for this device (code 31)". I downloaded updated 2003 drivers
from the D-Link site but WS2003 won't recognize them as good drivers when
I try to update the drivers via device manager. I also tried installing
Server 2003 without the NIC, installing it after the OS is installed, but
then Server 2003 runs VERY slowly after the hardware install and I don't
even get to the software install. I've also tried loading the driver
first, then the hardware but it doesn't even recognize the card at all
when I do that. I've tried different PCI slots with no luck. There are
no other PCI cards on this system, only an AGP video card. System
details:
P4 1.4 GHz
D850GB Intel MB
384MB Rambus Mem (yes, I know that's not a lot for S2003)
80GB HD
ASUS Video card (can't remember model off the top of my head..)
D-Link DFE-530TX+ NIC
Any ideas where I could go next to get this to work? Thanks in advance
for your help!
Rick
