The correct procedure is to shut down the old machine and not use it again.
And the licence / activation hotline is most definately not the same as
technical support which is why the person on the phone wouldn't know this.
(Why the question wasn't anticipated and an answer script given to all the
operators taking these calls is another issue of course, but hardly the
operator's fault).
