Well, guess what? You were right again. I found the Sound
Blaster at a Creative Labs website and downloaded the latest version which fit
perfectly well the Windows Server 2003 and now the sound is working. Many
thanks.
I am wondering if I may throw in another problem not driver
related which unexpectedly popped up yesterday just before I installed the
graphics card driver.
I got a message from MS that an upgrade for WinSer2003 was
available in the shape of SP1. Sure, it was an offer nobody would refuse. I
downloaded and installed it. I haven't noticed any positive changes in my
system but a negative one. I have some old software written in OO language of
Visual dBASE Plus which Win2K and WinSer2003 have tolerated well. After the
SP1 installation dBASE applications stopped working. I uninstalled the
database engine and tried to reinstall it to no avail. The OS does not even
allow the initial form (like a pop-up) to appear in autorun. It shows up and
disappears in a flick. If I click on the image of the installation CD in the
drive the same thing happens.
I turned off the pop-up blocker but it did not improve
anything.
I feel like the SP1 developers made a conscious decision not
to support some "old" platforms which is regrettable.
I also tried to uninstall that version of dBASE Plus DBE and
install a previous version (Visual dBASE). I was able to do the install but
when I try to run the applications an unhandled exception takes place and the
Visual Studio debugger when invoked does not give any information to get a
hang at: just blank screens. The VS debugger is, however, a stripped down
version which came in with the SQL Server Sept 2005 CTP, not the full version.
I've got the full version on the other partition but this is of little
consolation here.
Is there a way to get around the problem?
Thanks.
Can you check if Windows Audio service is up
and running?
Try to figure who is manufacturer of your sound
card and look on their web site for drivers for Windows 2003.
Drivers that work for Windows 2000 will most
often not work for Windows XP and Windows 2003. It is up to _hardware_
manufacturers to write drivers for latest operating systems (e.g. in this
case for Windows 2003).

You were absolutely right. I went to ATI, maker of
Radeon software (driver) for Dell monitors and downloaded the latest
version of their catalyst 5.10 driver. Now everything works perfectly
well.
My last remaining problem is sound. "Microsoft Kernel
Wave Mixer" is missing or unacceptable for WinSer2003. Again, it does not
give me any trouble on Win2K Pro partition. Where can I get an updated
version of that? I checked MS website and there is nothing matching it at
all.
Thanks a lot again.
Hi,
First thing to do is to check if there are
any newer drivers for your graphic card. These drivers should either be
provided by Dell or graphic card manufacturer...

I installed a new HDD with 7500 rpm and
then installed WinSer2003 on one of 4 partitions on this drive. I
do have Win2K Pro on main HDD (C: partition). Everything works fine in
there.
The problem with WinSer2003 is that I cannot get the
maximum resolution 1600x1200 on my Dell monitor. The maximum
resolution I get here is 1280x1040. It appears there is a problem with
the driver which is inconsistent with the OS. I also cannot get the
sound card driver running on this partition no matter what I
tried.
Another problem is that the execution of everything
and especially the visual effects are slow, at least 4 times slower
than on the main partition.
I called DELL TS and they tried to troubleshoot my
server. They finally gave up and said that it is the OS problem. I
believe it is since all those components are working fine on main
partition C:.
What shall I do to resolve the issue?
Thanks.
