Re: disabled in gpedit, but shutdown tracker still tracking

dang it!!
everything was poifect, see? then i did sp1: okay. remainder of updates:
okay. joined the domain: okay. installed sophos a/v: bam, i'm back where i
was.
now before we go blaming sophos, the last time i was having this problem
(all the way back 2 hours ago!), i couldn't even get as far as installing
sophos. so it's something else. i'm running a h/w diagnostic right now. (it
passed the quick test. hoping hoping hoping for an error in the extended).
so, while the speed of the box is fine and the shutdown tracker is disabled,
i get an error dialog at startup: 'at least one service or driver
failed during system startup. use event viewer to exam the event log for
details'. when i try to view the system events i get the dialog 'the event
log file is corrupt'. (info on this error:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811143 ). apps and
security work fine. also, i lost all my info in rsop and i've got a red X on
computer configuration.
okay. the extended h/w diag passed on all fronts.
okay, i just uninstalled sp1 and now the event viewer and rsop are working.
dammit!! going home for the weekend....
okay. hope everyone had a nice weekend. so, on boot, i still get the missing
services error. on checking the system log, source is service control
manager, event id 7000. after investigating, it appears that the vmm service
is not starting, hardly surprising as the service is not listed in services.
msc.
so, i'm hesitant to re-install at this point. i think it'll just happen
again. and what is the deal with sp1 hosing my viewers? i'm thinking maybe a
hardware issue, but that doesn't really seem likely, especially since the
hardware passed all tests.
honestly, while this is the first w2k3 box i've ever put into production,
i've done multiple test installs at home and here at work and never had any
problems like this. (my boss is taking the stance that SHE'S done plenty of
w2k3 boxes and SHE'S never had this problem so it must be something I'M
doing wrong. so please, help me before i get fired for hitting my boss!!)
thx,
evan
