Re: Windows Server 2003, SBS, or Linux as a home gateway to the internet?

Just remember, if you setup a "domain" with Win2k3, and any your laptops are
using XP Home, they can use "domain" resources, they just can't join the
domain on a permanent basis. Resources need to be remapped each and every
time they are attached.
To reinforce Dan, I agree, a Win2k3 server OS doesn't have to be a domain
controller, it can be just another member of the workgroup with shared
resources and access to other shared resources. Again, also, a hardware
router would be the way to go, instead of using the Win2k3 OS or the Linux
OS as a gateway, although both are capable, but would require dual NICs, one
to a router and one to the cable/dsl modem, and would become the bottleneck
of your network. Since you need a router anyway, just let it function as
the gateway and DHCP server for your network. This normally works best for
a large home network as you have described.
Also, with Linux you are not restricted to using IIS on Win2k3, you can
always use Apache/Tomcat on the Linux server, using MySQL and its mail
client (all cheaper than MS's version although you may have a higher
learning curve).
Lastly remember software for Win2k3 Server (such as Antivirus and other
utilities) are not cheap, and no the WinXP ones won't work - they won't even
install, where when using Linux, you don't have those problems.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth or opinion(s), and everyone else will have
theirs too.
