I would surely go with a hardware RAID solution rather than OS based RAID.

Some motherboards natively support SATA RAID 0 and1 like the SuperMicro
X5DPA and P4SC8 or the IBM 306 series. Both of them have the Adaptec
HostRAID build in. If you would like something that's more universal, try
an inexpensive PCI card from Adaptec or 3Ware. I had problems with the
Promise FasTrak controllers in the past and stay away from them now.

Most Adaptec products support SNMP traps. Most 3Ware and Adaptec cards
support email notification as well.
