Hi,

If you have only two DC and you decide to clean install one after another
there will be short(er) period of time when you will operate with only one
DC. Personally I don't like that :-) and if there is no other way, I usually
install DC on virtual computer (e.g. Virtual Server running on my laptop)
for the time of upgrade. Restore of domain from e.g. tape is not very simple
task. It takes me only about 15 additional minutes for to have 3rd DC
introduced into domain before I start any work.

When you decide to remove one current DC from domain to have it clean
installed, run DCPromo on it to remove the active directory from the server
(don't just shut it down). After you remove active directory from the
server, remove it from domain (disjoin it from domain and add it to
Workgroup). This processes should remove computer account from domain and
will allow you to use same server names on cleanly installed servers once
they are back.
Before you add your Windows 2003 servers to domain, make sure they are
up-to-date with all the latest patches.

It is always better to transfer FSMO roles.

Make sure that DC that will stay on-line is also a GC (Global Catalog) and
DNS server. You clients should point to both (all) domain controllers for
preferred DNS server under TCP/IP configuration.

I hope this helps,

Mike
