Just to let anyone else out there know that there IS a problem with
the Adaptec 1210SA Serial ATA controller and Hitachi Deskstar 250GB
disks.

Adaptec posted a modified driver on 13 June at
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/AAR-1210SA
which was supposed to fix the problem but it doesn't work.

The latest I have from Adaptec support is an email saying

   Hello Steve,
   We ahve been seeing problems similar to yours with the Hitachi
drives.
   It was thought that the new driver would resolve the issue, but
   apparently not. You can also see the problem in the BIOS (where
there
   is no driver loaded). Unfortunately, Adaptec and Hitachi do not
seem
   to have a resolution for this,

which falls in the fat-lot-of-good category.

So I've got 500GB of disks that I can't get working and no way out.
The supplier won't take them back as there's technically nothing wrong
with the card or the disks individually.

I'll keep this group posted should I find a fix.
