Jim,
Honestly with 1000 bucks you bould make one heck of a system. I really don't
like recommending parts and pieces as my experiences may vary from others.
That being said, check ebay, there are lots of servers available there for
under 1000 bucks.
For a nice test server I cannot see going wrong with a ML 310 or ML 330 both
of which you can get off of Ebay for half of your buget in most cases.
If it helps, I run Windows Server 2003 Standard on my laptop as my daily
system and it works fine with 512mb of ram (I even ran it on 256 mb for a
while, but Visio was killing me).
