I used a single Domain Controller for a year and the power supply failed (only the 5 volt side) This caused real funky errors with my back up for about 2 weeks. I was trying to figure that out when my hard drives failed. (all of them) I had a mirrored sys disk but that did me no good. I was barely able to save our e-mail but and was able to recover all data except the security database. This took me 6 days to recover from. I know run 2 domain controllers.

Matter of perspective. Backups (whether tapes or 'spare' DCs) don't sound
important until the day you need them. What happens if the backup tapes
won't restore for example. Apps that rely on Active Directory (e.g.
Exchange) also change the picture somewhat.
On the other hand, its a bit silly to have a small business that has 4
desktop PCs (say) and 2 servers. Everyone needs to look at their individual
situation and evaluate the costs of running a 2nd server vs. the costs of
not doing so in the event a disaster occurs to your only server.
What I would say is: I've been 'around' these groups since about 1998
I've seen lots of posts from people with only one DC who have had problems
because of that.
I've never seen anyone comment "I had 2 DCs once but switched one of them
off because it was a waste of electricity to have it".
