Michael:
I am not sure by you "newbie" moniker, but I am just to cover the very
basics. I hope I don't insult you covering ground you already know.
The error message seems to indicate that the software cannot recognize your
hard drive's partition and format as a part of the OS.
I am presuming that your Adaptec Raid Controller is a BIOS raid controller.
That means the hardware and firmware of the controller card controls,
manages, etc the SCSI interface and the array of hard drives. Whatever your
array(so) are, the arrays are done in hardware and firmware without the
knowledge of the operating system. The Adaptec Controller should have
provided you with a bootable CD which you boot your server to. With the
software on the CD you setup, and configure the arrays to present to the
normal OS as one or more hard drive(s).
However, once the array package is presented to the OS, the OS must create a
partition on the drive(s) and then format the drives. (or have a third
party s/w create the partition and format the array drives.)
Since the Array Controller card translates the file requests from the OS to
the array hardware, the Array Controller must have full knowledge of
the array configuration. Only it can assign and control membership.
So to reply to your questions as true "newbie":
1. Are you sure that you have setup the arrays in BIOS identically?
That includes setting up the block size identically.
2. The software you are using to copy the image, will it partition and
format the array drives correctly?
aside: some image software works better if you partition and format
the Boot (array) disk with the OS install CD.
3. If you are trying to direct copy HDD to HDD image in a SCSI array,
I am sure it will not work. BIOS RAID array members should be added
by BIOS card firmware.
4. You should be prepared for having to fully install the OS in the new
box, formatting the remaining hard drive arrays, and then copying the
image onto the formatted partitions of the new box.
Here is to hoping that your problems are not this basic.
