If you want, you can store update files remotely on Microsoft servers. WSUS
enables you to take advantage of Microsoft Update only for the distribution
of approved updates....
see the following microsoft document.
Deploying Microsoft Windows Server Update Services.doc
Running a VirusScan at shutdown is not a good idea, users can't be bothered
to wait as it's usually going home time, and turn their computers off half
way through. A scan at startup is a much better option. Your antivirus
software should allow this to be set...
If you don't have enough disk space to install WSUS, then you are seriously
running out of disk space.

We don't have disk space on our 2003 server to try WSUS.
I am setting XP workstations to have Automatic Windows or Microsoft Update
enabled, but no users have Administrator privilege. Found workstation
today
with 41 priority updates needed!
How can I write a script for a GPO which at shutdown will:
(a) install any updates queued on the workstation
(b) perform a Network Associates VirusScan on local hard drive
Apologies for my ignorance, but unless I can automate basic hygene I'll
never get time to learn.
