Background:
In my work place we just brought over 100 new PCs with Windows XP Prof,
installed, after configuration and join our Windows NT 4.0 Domain.
After setting up the print queue using JetDirect and installed the Windows
NT 4.0 driver onto the server.
Question:
The question is how can I set up all the clients with the correct driver
(e.g. HP LaserJet 1300 PS) and pointing to the Windows NT 4.0 printer queue
without going to each station to install the printer driver?
Thank,
Shing.
Hi,
to do this, you simply install the correct XP printer driver on the NT 4.0 print server. Do the following:
- At one of your XP Machines, point to Start -> Run, then type in \\<servername>, using the name of your NT 4.0 print server
- A new window opens that shows all shares the NT 4.0 server has, and in addition, there is a "Printers and Faxes" folder. Open this folder
- In the "Printers and Faxes on <server>" folder, point to File -> Server Properties, then on the "Drivers" tab
- Click on "Add..." to add a new XP printer driver to the NT 4.0 print server
- Make sure that the name of the XP printer driver is the same as the NT 4.0 printer driver. If this is not the case, change the name of the XP printer driver in the registry of the NT 4.0 print server. You will find the key under "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-3
When the XP clients connect to the print server and detect that there is a proper printer driver for them, they will download the driver from the server - you do not have to install the driver on each XP machine separately.
