Hello All,

I have a need to create couple of accounts in SBS 2008 and they should
not have email address. I have tried both SBS user wizard and AD add
user wizard and both require email alias.

These accounts are required to set up a temp ftp server access on the
SBS (once in 3 months two parties need to upload some large files) and
this ftp server will be enabled only on required basis. I do understand
impleications of running ftp server on LAN but this will be only tuened
on once in a while.

I have unsuccessfully tried freeFTPd (which keeps crashing) and
filezilla server, which had been complicated and I could not figure out
the issues. So I uninstalled both and thought to use IIS manager to turn
on ftp server.

I would have loved to use local accounts and not domain accounts and
looks like SBS 2008 does not permit creating local accounts. We do have
extra licenses for these couple of ftp user accounts, but I do not want
to create mailboxes for these.

Please help.

Thanks

Have you tried to go directly into ADUC without using any of the wizards,
right-click the OU you want to create the accounts in, choose New, User.
Follow the prompts. This is actually the old-fashioned (non-SBS) way of
creating users.

For FTP, Windows 2008 FTP (what SBS uses) is sufficient, however you are
correct, since it is a domain controller, local accounts do not exist. You
can also look into ServU FTP, a robust FTP server that has its own built-in
account database independent of the operating system. You can setup home
folders, and lock a user account into the home folder so they have no access
elsewhere on the drive(s). You can even throttle bandwidth per user, watch
user activity in real time, and it offers resuming (Windows 2008 FTP offers
that too), as well as throttle upload/download total bytes. I actually use
it myself instead of Windows (IIS) FTP. If you install it, you have to
disable or unistall FTP role in Windows (SBS).

Serv-U FTP
ServerServ-U is the FTP server that is both secure and easy to use. Sharing
files through the Internet is a smooth process with the industry's most
popular FTP ... etc...
