Re: DHCP server on 2003 - Trying to assign an IP out of scope?

That's quite similar indeed! Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, since the firmware on my router was updated a few months ago), the MAC address in question is a PC, not the router as it was in his case. The particular PC is on the network every day, too, it's not new.

This post sounds similar. The "fix" appears to have been updating the firmware on the router...

We have but one DHCP server: SBS 2003 R2 SP2. DHCP is disabled on the router.
The only scope: 192.168.1.102 to 149
The server's static IP: 101
Everyone but the server uses DHCP

Four times in the last year with four different machines, we've received Event ID 4199 in tcpip:

"The system detected an address conflict for IP address 192.168.1.101 with the system having network hardware address [MAC here]. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result."

*Ten seconds* after the event that happened today, the DHCP log shows that the machine corresponding to the above MAC received a renewal on 192.168.1.102. This was obviously not a case of a rogue static assignment but apparently some type of bug in the DHCP address renewal process.

Is it a coincidence that the addresses are neighboring? Unfortunately, I don't know if that's been the case all along.

The DNS tab on the DHCP server is set for "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records only if requested by DHCP clients" and "Discard A and PTR records when lease is deleted," which should be defaults.
