I noticed a public folder that is apparently being used to archive all
incoming e-mails. It's very large (IMO) at over 16,000 emails and taking
up quote a bit of space. I have tried deleting e-mails from 2006 to 2008,
but it tells me that I do not have permission (I am the aministrator and I
tried doing it from the public folder within Outlook). I tried going into
the Exchange System Manager and doing it there, but the e-mails don't show
up under the folder there. I added my regular login name to the
Permissions, but I am still unable to delete the e-mails from within
Outlook (btw, when I look at the permissions of the archive folder in
Outlook, it's not showing the permissions that I gave myself from within
the Exchange System Manager).

We are using SBS2K3 Prem. Ed. with all service packs installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

If you've set the permissions (roles) using the ESM under the public folder
section, and it's not reflecting that on the client side, then it's
indicating a communications issue. Are there any Event log errors on the SBS
server, or on the clients? Are the clients and the SBS server only using the
SBS server for its DNS address in their IP properties? If not, that will
definitely cause a problem.

Also, if you don't have the Owner role on the folder, you won't be able to
see the Permissions tab in the folder properties.

You can also download and use the PFAdmin tool from Microsoft. Be careful
what you delete with it...
