Hi

We have recently migrated a customer domain to SBS2008 from SBS2003.
The SBS2003 server had a GPO configured to redirect %appdata%
folders to the SBS2003 server using the UNC
\\SBS2003\users\username\Application Data. This
GPO was modified during the migration to
\\SBS2008\users\username\Application
Data. When runnig RSOP.MSC, we can see that the modified GPO took
effect on
client computers. The problem is that some applications still
refers back to
\\SBS2003\users\username\Application Data in the registry of the
client computers. This is causing very slow logons. As a
workaround, we have modified DNS to point all requests for SBS2003
to the IP address of the new
SBS2008 server. This helped for slow logons, but users are now
complaining
that the applications wont save settings. We would like to get rid
of the workaround, as it would have a future impact on the next
migration. Please help

What I've done to help someone else on this, is specifically change
the settings in the reg from (such as in your scenario)
"\\SBS2003\users" to "\\SBS2008\users," and it worked fine.

I'm not sure why it didn't change over during their migration, since
I was not part of it and came in after the fact and was too difficult
to figure out because I don't know all the steps that were followed,
what order, if something was missed, if any problems developed, etc,
but that method worked fine and haven't heard of any issues since.

If you are looking for a reason why it didn't change over, my guess
is that the new one server with the shared locations would have to be
setup and in place, and the GPO set to move data to the new location,
the use of GPO logging on the client side, etc, but in many cases, it
can be difficult to figure out. Maybe someone else can provide a
specific reason why it may not have changed that I missed.

It doesn't happen for all software applications, but I have seen issues
with Application Data folder redirection in the past - some software
developers hardcode the path in their registry keys when you install their
software instead of respecting the variable Windows sets.

Don't you love developers doing it their *own* way? :-)
