Re: Administrator accounts

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Don't overthink the problem.

Accounts used for purely administrative purposes do not require CALs.

NOTE: In versions of SBS prior to SBS08 the License Logging Service had a
habit of 'allocating' a CAL to 'service accounts'. Though theoretically 'CAL
exempt' some methods of implementation, the interaction of that
implementation with LLS, and the resulting behaviours at LLS 'limits' made
it more expedient to cover such accounts with a CAL.

SBS08 doesn't even try to count.

Just thought of something else,
what about say, antivirus software that requires a user account for it's
central administration?
Or backup or LOB software?
As they are just used for that software's admin, I take it they don't
consume a cal?

Thanks guys,

I had it in my mind somhow that you were allowed 2 distinct 'admin' user
accounts for purely administration duties like patching etc.
Don't know where I got that but oh well....

It's the sort of question that Microsoft are not good at giving an easy
answer to.

Cheers,
Dave

or possibly more correctly? any account used for purely
administrative
purposes does not require a CAL.

Theoretically an account that does not belong to Domain Admins could
be
used for administration of, say, your LOB application. Rather than
putting
this account in DomAdmin the specific rights required could be
assigned a
user.

I think we've been batting this one around since SBS 4.0. The last
consensus I remember is that Domain Administrator accounts do not
consume
a CAL. So, you can have as many as you need but, of course, they
should
not be used for normal user activities, just server/workstation
administration duties. SBS still only allows Terminal Services in
Remote
Administration Mode, so only 2 "remote sessions" can be established
via an
RDP or RWW session by Domain Administrators.

Hi,

How many purely admin accounts can be used on an SBS or Windows
2008
server
box?
By this I mean, if I am the administrator and user, I add myself as
a
standard user for day to day activities and client access. I also
add an
administrator account for server admin duties.

I may then want to give say a trusted office manager an admin
account
also
to enable them to add software on users pc's etc.

How many of these accounts can I have regards licensing terms?

Hope that's clear?

Thanks
