Re: UPS for server

fyi,

Dell to begin selling un-interruptible power supplies
http://www.itbusiness.ca/it/client/en/CDN/News.asp?sub=true&id=54459

There's a chance this might help those purchasing Dell servers select an appropriate UPS from the same source. (so long as dell doesn't follow the minimalist approach they're often quite good at ;-)).

I've purchased these over the past couple of years, and been quite satisfied. I used their support once, and it was great.

My only addition to this is to STRONGLY suggest that you stretch the budget to get an "online" UPS. Yes, they are more expensive. But they are a LOT better at protecting your network from the spikes and surges that often happen at the time of power failures and restores. And that _do_ slip through the surge protection features of failover UPSs.

The APC that is labeled SC1500 produces a "square" simulated sine

but I have had ML 350s that will not work with the SC1500.

The SUV1500 produces a true sine wave, and the same servers are ok
with it. You should notice that it is roughly $100 more than the
SC1500.

I use SmartUPS 1500 standalones at minimum. Larger units (XL series) for environments that need them - network cards are available for nearly all SmartUPS models. I have never gone wrong with APC and they have saved my ___ many times.
