After all, the USB backup disk drive had a problem with the driver because
that was reported in Event Viewer. So the USB backup drive was unplugged
and
all issues went away. Then I finally took time to research the issues with
the Quantum tape drive and discovered that there was actually no issue at
all. I just had to properly prepare the backup tapes for NTBackup to be
able
to use them. The following document details how to administer backups
using
NTBackup at the same data rate as any other software will process it (what
took the USB almost the whole weekend to backup only took about three
hours
with NTBackup and the Quantum tape drive over SCSI;
http://www.techworxs.com/docs/WindowsNTBackupAdministration.pdf
This will surely help someone. Thanx again Merv.

There were two of the same USB drives. The other one already failed a few
months back. Now I am speaking with Quantum to get their tape drive
working
with Windows backup. It was working fine with the bundled Backup Exec
until a
month after when we realized that the bundled Backup Exec was
deliberately
incomplete and needs an SQL component to backup any SQL database. We
called
Symantec and they were trying to have us shell out $1000 for just that,
so we
removed Backup Exec. In the process of removing Backup Exec it removed or
ruined the driver for the Quantum tape drive and no matter how many times
we've reinstalled the driver, it just has not worked. Adaptec has remoted
and
made sure their SCSI card is well installed with the most recent driver
and
communicating with the tape drive. So now I am on QUantum for their tape
drive to work because even their own software Dashboard says it cannot
detect
a compatible tape drive. This morning the server sent an alert that the
USB
backup drive is experiencing lots of activity, it may fail soon since it
has
lasted almost twice as much as its twin. It is surely a malfunction of
some
sort because the USB drive is supposed to be idle until the evening when
it
does its backup, so for it to be thrashing this morning is not a good
sign at
all, that's why I'm getting on Quantum's *** to get the tape drive
working
ASAP.
And thanx again for saving me a lot of headache yesterday. I sent a
message
to the boss to suggest a backup server since the current one is just over
two
years old, so if he follows through fine otherwise such suggestions will
surely indicate that I tried to prevent what may happen later because you
and
I know that these things must fail, its just a matter of ...WHEN? I will
update here.

I was reading another post and someone mentioned that his the driver
for
USB
backup drive was the culprit. so I further noticed that after I
connected
the
USB backup drive was when the problem came back, so I disconnected it
again
as the last time it fully booted up. And voila it booted up well
again.
This
may be it, I'm not completely sure yet until I reboot a couple more
times,
not sure when that will be though.
"techieg" wrote:
After another reboot, the "Active Directory is rebuilding indices.
Please
wait" error came up again. I'm not sure what to do at this point
anymore.
This is critical.

I guess this means there is nothing wrong with AD after all since
neither
MSBPA and MSBSA mentioned anything related to it. Am I right? Or
would
they
have reported on any AD corruption issues if any?
"techieg" wrote:
I wonder how I can explain this to the boss being that the tape
drive
is a
couple months old and we were on USB until we moved to tape due
to
long
backup periods over USB and one of he USB disk drives failed
after
over a
year in use. The last USB backup was from 6pm on Friday and
completed
sometime yesterday so that kind of made me at ease. Now I ran
the
MSBOA and
it came with rater unrelated errors such as both NIC drivers are
old,
allocated memory threshold needs to be increased to match RAM
size,
disable
EDNS, secure reverse DNS Zones updates, server Status Reports
timing
out in
the past 24hs. All the errors compiled by MSBPA have been
updated
except for
finding new compatible software for the NICs. I have to do
another
backup as
well for safeguard but that may run into business hours
tomorrow,
which means
more load.

First, I'd make sure I had another good, full backup of the
server
to an
external USB drive. I gave up on tape drives a few years ago.
I
liked the
small size but had too many problems with the drivers and
hardware.
For SBS
2003, I've switched to Western Digital Passport drives and
haven't
looked
back.
Once you know you have a good backup to USB, I think I would
reconfigured
the SBS Backup Wizard to use the USB drive instead of the tape
drive. Then
grab the SBS install key from the registry. After that, I
would
reboot the
server a few times to make sure it rebooted properly with all
services
started and clean event logs. If all was well, I'd run the
server
for a few
days using the ext. USB drive for backups. If no problems,
I'd
then decide
if it was worth the effort to continue troubleshooting the
tape
drive. If
not, ditch the tape drive and buy a set of USB drives to
alternate
for
backups.

Wow! Thanx for the great idea Merv. After unplugging
everything
from the
server except the mouse and keyboard, it booted just fine. I
am
starting
to
suspect the Quantum tape drive we installed on the server,
its
driver has
been giving issues or it may be SCSI card that is not
properly
communicating
with the tape drive. In either case they both say the driver
is
installed
and
working properly but no tape drive is detected when backup
needs
to
happen.
It is most likely the tape drive because it was
disconnected
form the
server
but the card still remains in the PCIe slot in the server.
Now I
am unsure
if
AD is actually corrupt as a result or if I really need to
try AD
Restore
Mode
again at this point.
What do you think?

That's about th only thing I need to try now I guess before

the

keys
are (should be with the boss but nobody is here today and
nobody
else
knows
what's going yet so they do not go crazy and only cause me
more
prsseure), I
hope I can install SBS without the license in trial mode
then
restore the
backup which I also hope will apply the existing product
keys
that I
assume
will be part of the backup data. Am I correct?

I have not been able to run the BPA. However, I have
been
trying to
restore
the
system state (last backed up yesterday) which also
contains
a copy of
AD
via
the Directory Services Restore Mode but the system has
been
sitting
in the
"Applying system settings" forever. When I arrived
onsite,
before I
tried
entering entering this mode, the server had been
sitting in
startup
since
lawt time I rebooted it remotely where it displayed
"active
directory
is
rebuilding indices. please wait" . So I shut it down
and
rebooted to
access
the Active Directory Restore Mode, which is where it is
still sitting
at
"Applying Systems Settings" right now. So I may not
even be
able to
see
its
interface anymore. We have been trying to resolve
driver
issues with
Quantum
backup drive, something told me to go there on Friday
to
make sure I
backup
to an alternate location, which is an external USB
drive.
Looking at
the
backup folder, it says the backup completed on
Saturday, so
this is
some
***-saving backup job form which I hope a data restore
is
possible.
In
the
meantime, I came to get some tools to possibly
reinstall the
whole
system
either on another hardware but preferably on the same
hardware so I
can
restore the backup to get up and running fast.
Any advise in this situation?

No, it is not at start up, although at start up it
has
always
displayed
a
dialogue box that says something like "At least one
service failed
to
start...." but that has not affected any
functionalities.
It
displays
the
error "the workstation driver is not installed" when
I
try to use
Remote
Desktop Connection to get to the server. Now it
seems no
AD
account can
get
to the server. Now I am having to use a third party
remote
solution to
get
to
the server as backup in times like this. I found the
current Event
ID
1168
in
the Event Viewer under "System". According to what I
have
read
after
googling
"the workstation driver is not installed", this may
have
to do
with
Active
Directory. I have read through
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=322267
but
I am
quite
sure
this does not apply because the "Client for
Microsoft
Networks" is
still
on
.
