Re: SBS 2003 Backup Failures

Hi Robbin,

Thank you for your response.

I have used a recovery storage group on the server but that was last year
and the recovery group was deleted after it was used and no longer appears in
the exchnage system manager.

I have loaded the "Small Business Backup Script.bks" file but there is no
reference to the recovery storage group under microsoft exchnage server.

When I have done this is the past the backup job will run and complete
sucefully howver as soon as it runs as a shceduled job or using the run now
option the job fails with the error messages in the previous posts.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your post and others' good suggestions.

First, I would like to confirm if you have any Recovery Storage Group(RSG) created in your Exchange server? If they are not in use, can you please remove it and retry the backup for a test?

SBS backup selection script ( Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks ) created by the Backup Configuration Wizard contains references to
the Exchange Recovery Storage Group. The RSG will be added to the script. However, NTbackup is not able to back it up either via the script or directly via the NTbackup GUI.

Now I would like to suggest you run NTBackup manually, and load the Small Business Backup Script. Use NTbackup to remove Recovery Storage Group reference from the backup selection script:

To run NTBackup manually and load the script

1. Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then press Enter. The Backup or Restore Wizard launches.
2. On the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced Mode.
3. Click the Backup tab.
4. From the Job menu, choose Load Selections.
5. In the File Name box type %sbsprogramdir%\backup.
6. Click Small Business Backup Script.bks to select, and click Open.
7. On the Backup tab, click Start Backup.

If the backup succeeds, run the Windows Small Business Server Backup Configuration Wizard from the Backup taskpad in Server Management and see if the issue still occurs.

Hope this helps.
