I'll admit I haven't touched the Blackberry desktop software in over two years. Had a client with several Blackberry devices that kept getting corrupted synchronzing with the desktop software - seemed every few weeks we were resetting a device, reconfiguring the local desktop sync, etc. This was before BPS was released - the customer insisted it was critical to their business to have contacts & calendars sync'd to everyone's Blackberry, but they refused to invest in BES, refused to consider different smart phones that could utilize EAS, didn't want to pay us to keep resetting phones, but the users were too *WAY* too important to be tasked with resetting the device themselves (*gasp* - the horror!) :^) Needless to say, they ceased being a customer, and I haven't touched the BB desktop software since . . .

the BB has a desktop connection manager that syncs with outlook...grant it.
not wirelessly.
and yes the BIS does get attachments with the option of downloading and
opening if wanted...through my provider anyway
For a small shop it works just fine without the need of another server and
additional software

Blackberry Internet Services (BIS), which polls OWA only receives e-mail,
and someone correct me if I’m wrong, but the last time I helped someone set
up their Blackberry, a Blackberry rep told us that BIS only gets message
bodies - it does not get attachments.
POP / IMAP allows Blackberry devices to receive e-mail & attachments.
BPS\BES allows users to wirelessly sync e-mail (including attachments),
calendar, contacts, etc. over-the-air, and also provides the business with a
mechanism to enforce policies on the devices, controlling what features &
functionality are available on the device to the user, etc.
