Re: SBS 2008 Backup - restore utility?

If you've already installed a fresh copy of SBS 2008 on another server, have
you tried this? (not from the SBS console)

Recover Files or Folders
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794321(WS.10).aspx

Use the Recovery Wizard

If you cannot restore the previous version of a file or folder, you can use
the Recovery Wizard in Windows Server Backup to recover files and folders
from a backup.

From the Start menu, click Administrative Tools, and then click Windows
Server Backup
etc.

OK, Merv,

The information below may work for others, but once you have installed SBS
on another computer as recommended in the information you shared in your
previous post, the SBS backup program should allow you to recover the data
by doing the following:

1. On the SBS Console, select the Backup and Server Storage tab.
2. On the Tasks pane, click on "Restore server data from backup". This
will open the Windows Server Backup program.
3. On the Actions pane, click on "Recover...". This will run the
Recovery Wizard.
4. On the Getting Started window, choose "Another server" and click Next.
5. On the Specify location type window, choose "Local drives" and clik
Next.
6. Choose your USB drive from the dropdown list and click Next.
7. I suppose that if you have a backup drive that has the right
information on it, you should be able to choose what you want to restore
from backup. HOWEVER, in my case, this is not what is happening. Instead,
I get the message: "The backup location specified does not contain any
backup. Specify another backup location."

So, now it appears that this SBS backup drive is not available in any way
possible. My customer's entire business is on there and this backup drive
is the only hope of them recovering from this fire loss.

I failed to mention before that my attempt to do a bare metal recovery
using the installation disc for SBS also failed to recognize the data on
the drive, BUT using that program I was able to open a command window and
view the files on there - I saw a backup folder with a name that
accurately reflected the date of the last backup performed, and inside
that folder, there are many, many files with a .XML extension, I presume
records of the several incremental backups performed to that drive over
time.

The information that you share below is not valid in my experience because
a genuine SBS backup drive is not accessible from within Windows in order
for you to complete step 6 below. You are unable to access the drive at
all, in fact, the native SBS backup drives do not show up anywhere except
the disk manager. (I have just confirmed this on another SBS computer, to
be sure). If you take that drive to another Windows computer, that
computer will see it and assign it a drive letter, but will deny you
access to it.

I need help, and I need it bad. I am a MS registered partner, so I will
take advantage of my support options there. I am still open to any
suggestions you may have to share for the benefit of others, and I will
report back here on the results of my support call with MS. THANK YOU for
your help so far - we all appreciate what you do on a daily basis to help
others.

Regards,
Warren

Warren... is this any help?

Finally got around Carbonite's failure AND SBS 2008's failure
http://www.emmanuelcomputerconsulting.com/archives/1934

Luckily mounting the .vhd worked..but not without it's own issues. The
instructions i talked about in my last post forget one thing. The weird
filename that the system generates make the vhdmount program barf. I
also wound up having to put the files inside the vhdmount folder onto the
drive in the same folder as the vhd file. I also had to rename the vhd
file. So here's my restoration procedure:

1. Reformat the server
2. Reload SBS onto said server
3. get sbs setup
4. download MS virtual Server 2005 sp1 for 64 bit
5. install just vhdmount
6. copy the files from vhdmount(make sure you ahve hidden files in view)
to the directory on the usb drive that contains the vhd file
7. rename the vhd file to backup.vhd
8. type: vhdmount /m backup.vhd
9. in a minute or two you should have another drive mounted.
10. take ownership of the entire drive
11. change the permisison so admins have all permissions.
Now you can copy the files from the drive to your sbs server.

Merv,

I'm struggling with this - vhdmount requires a file name of the virtual
drive, but I'm pretty sure that the SBS backup drive is not a virtual
drive, and if it were, I am unable to access the drive in windows to
determine what the filename is. Windows sees it as an external USB
drive, loads the drivers and assigns it a drive letter, but does not
allow me to explore it. "E: is not accessable. Access denied."

Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Warren

Hi Warren,

Compiled from some Google searches...

- download Virtual Server 2005
- only installed vhdmount
- mount the VHD file from the windows server 2008 backup disk

If you need VHDMount but you don't need or want to install Virtual
Server you can install only the VHDMount components, use the Custom
option in the Virtual Server R2 SP1 installer and clear all components
except VHDMount.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 - Enterprise Edition

Mounting VHD files with VHDMount - Microsoft Virtual Server

Should work with XP Pro, Vista Business or better, Windows 2003
Standard

Hello,

I support a customer whose office was destroyed in a fire. They have
SBS 2008 Standard Edition. We have the backup drive that was kept
offsite, and have an immediate need to recover some data from that
drive.

Is there a utility available that will allow me to recover individual
files from an SBS 2008 backup drive? Or, must I perform a full
restore in order to get those files?

Thanks,
Warren Sever
