Re: Questions regarding migration to SBS 2008 from SBS 2003 Premium

Thanks Chris. As always I value your input. I didn't see if you answered my other questions.

!. Do I configure the WAN settings on the Linksys?
2. What about ISA 2004? Will my clients still have external access after the Linksys is in place?

I only have about a dozen active user accounts. After I get SBS 2008 migrated I will be replacing the Linksys with W2K3 Server and ISA 2006.

I'm planning an SBS 2003 Premium to SBS 2008 Standard migration. I got a
couple of questions regarding the migration process document and certainly
would appreciate any input or advice.
Using the "Migrate to Windows Small Business Server 2008 from Windows Small
Business Server 2003" documentation where it wants you to disconnect your
ecternal internet connection and replace it with a router. Here is where I
got my first question regarding Step 3. See my inline comments in Step 3.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc527583(WS.10).aspx

To configure the Source Server to use one network adapter
1.. Unplug the network adapter from the broadband connection.

Note
For more information, see the "Connect Computers on Your Network"
section in "Planning Your Windows Small Business Server 2008 Network" at the
Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=104282).

2.. Install a router on your network as shown in Figure 1.

Note
For more information about installing a router, see the "Verify Your
Router Setup" section in "Planning Your Windows Small Business Server 2008
Network" at the Microsoft Web site
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=104282).

3.. To make sure that the Windows SBS 2008 installation wizard can find
the router on your network, ensure that the IP address on the network
adapter that is in the router and that connects to your LAN is set to either
192.168.x.1 or 192.168.x.254, where x is a number from 1 to 254. This IP
address is the default gateway address for your network.

Note
For information about installing and configuring a router, see the
documentation from your router manufacturer.

I'M GOING TO USE AN OLD LINKSYS BEFSR41 4-PORT ROUTER TEMPORARILY.
THE ABOVE INTRUCTIONS WANT YOU TO CONGIURE IT WITH A LAN IP OF 192.168.1.X.
MY INTERNAL NETWORK IS CONFIGURE FOR 192.168.16.X.
DO I CONFIURE THE LINKSYS AS 192.168.1.1 AS INTRSUCTED OR DO I USE
192.168.16.1?
******use your own internal range of 16.1

ALSO DO I INPUT THE WAN SETTINGS ON THE LINKSYS USING THE EXTERNAL
WAN SETTINGS FROM MY SBS 2003 SERVER?

*********

4.. On the Source Server, run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection
Wizard to configure the Source Server for one network adapter, as follows:

1.. Click Start, and then click Server Management.

2.. In the console pane, click To Do List.

3.. In the details pane, click Connect to the Internet.

4.. Complete the wizard.
ALSO DOES SBS 2003 CONTINUE TO WORK AFTER THE LINKSYS IS IN
PLACE AND CONFIGURED AND DURING THIS MIGRATION. WILL MY EMAIL AND INTERNET
ACCESS CONTINUE TO WORK DURING THE MIGRATION UNTIL SBS 2008 IS FULLY
INSTALLED?

There will be a point after you've moved mail boxes etc, that everything will move to the 08 server. You'll have to modify the port forwarding on the router to go to the 08 server rather than the 03 server
