Re: SBS2008 Testing with a SBS2003 Production Network

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Makes sense to me Mark. Just a bit of input and question here. I read that
SBS 2008 can co-exist in the same network as SBS 2003. I assume this is for
migration purposes?

Thanks for your reply.

I agree with you; I did not think it through about the DNS and DHCP
fighting
each other; I would have to shut one of the DC's DNS and DHCP services
down.
A VLAN it is.

I would advice you to setup a new VLAN for your testing (it is not to
time
consuming :) and can prevent problems in production environment).

The problem you can face is that you will have to DHCP servers on the
same
subnet which is not a good idea, becasue each SBS will treat the other
SBS's
DHCP server as a rougue server, which can lead to troubles for example
unexpected shutdown of on of DHCP servers.

I am thinking about setting up a SBS2008 server on the same subnet as
the
current SBS2003 production server. Of course the SBS2008 will have its
own
new forest and domain, and I will start with a new SBS2008 installation
when
it comes time to do the SBS2003 to SBS2008 migration. This will allow
me to
have several test workstations within easy reach, test the new firewall
setup, etc.

Any precautions I should be aware of? Any preparations needed to
prevent
problems on the production SBS2003 domain (as both will be in the same
subnet)?

If this is not a good idea, I would then make a vlan in one of the
switches
just for this test network, although it would be simpler to have both
2008
and 2003 in the same subnet for now.

Thanks!
