Thanks for the post and assistance. The client does not want to do RAID
because of the costs. I understand they are not too expensive, but they
are
really limited on their budget right now and had a fit just having to
shell
out for 2 72GB SCSI drives. It is a must that they do the upgrade, because
their current C drive is causing network issues because of the Bad Blocks.
I
am currently running a defrag and will rerun the chkdsk /f /r when that is
complete. I tried stopping all the Exchange services when I did the backup
yesterday but it still failed. I have downloaded some of the Exchange
tools
and will run them before attempting the backup again. Are you talking
about
the Ghost Backup software? I see they have a 30 day free trial, so may
give
that a try if all else fails. I just need to verify with them that the
trial
version does not have any limitations. Once again, thanks for your help.
I posted a response, but it didn't get posted. Probably because I had
auction links as examples of cards that are under $100.00. Here is the rest
of the post:
I can understand a tight budget. I guess I would be selling the long term
benefits of doing it right the first time, or at least while they're at this
juncture with the damaged drive.
Curious, how much were the drives?
I've come up with solutions for budget conscious customers in the past. I've
found controllers from eBay. I try to find new ones, but have settled for
used ones that are still in operation for the past two years.
For example, the Dell PERC 4SC cards are single channel, There are also dual
channels card, which you don't need but if the price is right, you can get
them,
too. They are the 4 Si cards. If the server has PCIx slots (which I kind of
doubt),
you can go one model up to the 5 Si cards ("i" = internal). The PERCs are
made
by LSI Logic and will fit non-Dell machines with PCI slots. You can also opt
for
Adaptec RAID cards if you don't like the Dell PERCs.
Whichever card you choose, just make sure it fits the type of slots the
server has
available.
I'm kind of surprised the customer can't swing a few extra bucks for
hardware
RAID. It would make it easier on yourself as well.
