Thanks for the post and assistance. The client does not want to do RAID
because of the costs. I understand they are not too expensive, but they are
really limited on their budget right now and had a fit just having to shell
out for 2 72GB SCSI drives. It is a must that they do the upgrade, because
their current C drive is causing network issues because of the Bad Blocks. I
am currently running a defrag and will rerun the chkdsk /f /r when that is
complete. I tried stopping all the Exchange services when I did the backup
yesterday but it still failed. I have downloaded some of the Exchange tools
and will run them before attempting the backup again. Are you talking about
the Ghost Backup software? I see they have a 30 day free trial, so may give
that a try if all else fails. I just need to verify with them that the trial
version does not have any limitations. Once again, thanks for your help.

I understand all this. I have done this in the past, but it has been a few
years. I have many things going on, and I know I can handle this. I have
created all forms of RAID via hardware before, but never had to do it
through
Windows itself. I did recommend a RAID controller to my client, but they
did
not want to do that. I am not going to "break anything" on my clients
sytem,
which is why I am trying to find out why the Exchange files will not
backup.
I charge by the job, not by the hour for this particular client. Any how,
After running chkdsk /f /r on a reboot there are still bad blocks on the
drive, which I am pretty sure is why it will not mirror. My concern at
this
point is why the priv1.edb and .stm file will not back up. I have checked
the
error logs but they are showing nothing that could help decipher this
issue.
If I can get those files to backup, then I can wipe the system clean and
start fresh with the mirroed drives. I understand about backing up
Exchange
Server. I have tried it both with the software my client uses and the SBS
2003 utility, but both of these files fail to backup.

Thanks for your help.
With Exchange, stop all Exchange services and run an offline (flat file)
backup of the whole exchsrv folder. I posted links on how to restore from an
offline backup in the other thread.
It's possible the bad blocks are causing it not to sync. In such cases, I've
found I was able to Ghost a drive such as this to another one, such as a
larger drive. What's nice about Ghost, Acronis, etc, you can specify any
size drive as the target, smaller or larger. Of course if smaller, the size
must be greater than the amount of data, but your'e going larger, so it will
work. Then build a RAID array with hardware (or Windows) off the new one.
Curious, why does the customer not want to go with a hardware RAID solution?
Costs? The cards are not that expensive. With Windows RAID, there's about a
10% or more hit on performance. Sometimes it's really noticable. Either way,
whether you go with Windows or a hardware solution, you will still need two
72 gig drives.
