No idea what they charge in California, might be able to get you some feedback from some sources.
So this was a friends system you installed?
In my experience, it wouldn't matter if it were my brother, if someone is paying you to do work for them, you need everything spelled out in writing and signed. Family and friends are the worst.

Without addressing this in to much depth I charged an hourly rate, however, I
can't help to wonder what an average (or very broad range) flat rate may
amount to in California. I have been involved in IT for many years in
different capacities and did this install successfully, my first time, for a
friend.
