were the only reason I knew it was a power issue, although eventually the
line failed completely).

More recently wired parts of our office use a big UPS for all the desktops,
but in the older parts, I can't change the wiring without ending up with
printers on the UPS-protected circuits, so those areas use the small
individual ones.

Agreeing with all points of view, because this is, or can be, a personal
preference.  However, from years of supporting not very well controlled
accounting and other database applications, I can tell you that the first
time your accounts are trashed because the workstation powered off while
the files were being updated, you will wish you had a UPS.

I agree with Leythos and SG - I've been happy with APCs in the 1500-2200
range.  One comment about Leythos' recommendation to protect the
workstations as well - I've had some bad experiences with the cheapest
APC
UPSs on workstations - they don't always fail over fast enough to
prevent a
reboot in the event of a very brief interruption, which is mostly what I
get
here.  If you look at the specs for "topology," the ones I've had good
results with are "line interactive."  IMO the "standby" ones often don't
fail over quickly enough to be useful.

I normally purchase the Backup ES7xx series for workstations, they are
almost always under $80, and often on sale for $59.

I would tend to agree that you should choose a major company, APC is
certainly a good choice. I have a large 'no brand" UPS. It works
great. For Win 2003 it came with software. Now that I have moved to
Win 2008, I can't get UPS software to run the UPS like before. APC
does provide upgraded software.

Good luck,
