RE: Vista profile is private cannot ConnectComputer SBS2003R2

Hello,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that:

You cannot join the Windows Vista clients to SBS domain with the error "The
following user settings are private".

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First of all, please make sure you have installed the Windows Vista and
Outlook 2007 Compatibility update for SBS 2003. You can get more
information from:

You may try to locate the files and folders that the SBS wizard thinks it
as private. To locate the "private" files and folders:

1. On the client computer, quit the Windows Small Business Server Network
Configuration Wizard if it is running.
2. Start Windows Explorer, and then open the SBSNetSetup.log file by using
a text editor such as Notepad. This file is located in the following folder
on the client computer: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Clients
3. Examine the log file for information that is similar to the following:
CProfileList::IsPrivateProfile( <UserName> )
CProfileList::IsPrivateProfile() - starting the search [C:\Documents and
Settings\<UserName>] CProfileList::IsPrivateDir() - returning TRUE for
[C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Temp\JunkFiles]
CProfileList::FindPrivateDir() - returning true [C:\Documents and
Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Temp\JunkFiles] In this log file, the
last two lines return a value of True for private files in the temporary
folder of the affected user's profile.
4. Delete the files that the SBSNetSetup.log file indicates are private
from the user's profile. In the example log file from step 3, remove the
files from the affected user's JunkFiles folder.
5. Quit Windows Explorer.
6. Visit the following Web site to migrate the user's profile to Windows
Small Business Server 2003: <http://ServerName/ConnectComputer>

These steps will generally help to identify the files which have the
problem and we will be able to migrate the profile.

However, we might also see a situation where the complete user folder is
shown in the log file.If that is the case we cannot delete the whole folder
because that contains the complete profile.

1. What comes in play here is the added security features of Vista

In this case , we will have to disable the User Account Control property on
the Vista machine that we are trying to add to the domain

To do this follow these steps :

a. Open User Accounts. To do this, click Start, type accounts in the Start
Search box, and then click User Accounts in the Programs list.
b. Click Turn User Account Control on or off. User Account Control
permission " title="User Account Control permission "> If you are prompted
for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or
click Continue.
c. Click to clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your
computer check box, and then click OK.
d. Restart the computer.

2. If we face a similar problem , even after disabling UAC , then we need
to check the permissions on the user profile folder. Ensure that the user
has correct permissions on the folder and make sure these are propagated to
all the child nodes within that folder.
