that $400 (is that US$?) for a switch sounds a bit high, compare http://www.otq.com.au/lsprice.htm#fax
Also, modems come in various flavours. One variation being whether any additional line port be 'parallel' or 'switched'. eg. I have an older Microcom DeskPorte connected to the LoungeAN SBS. Two telephone connectors on the back are clearly marked 'line' vs 'phone'. When the modem takes the line it actually disconnects the 'phone' port so that any device 'cascaded' off this _cannot_ interfere with comms. Cascading multiple modems on a single line is simple in such case.
Of course, most 'el cheapo' modems will not have such 'switched' ports, but then they're probably not going to work well anyway.

One of my sites does this, both modems are set to wait for dial tone so if the line is busy from the 'other' server it waits. Two modems one line. The only issue is total volume of faxes but it should equal what you were going to send over the one modem anyway.

downsides are we would need to add an additional fax line or install some
sort of line blocker hardware (to ensure two fax devices are not attempting
to use same line at same time).
- Second fax line is $200+ to install plus $60 per month.
- Line blocker hardware is $400+ (must function with Toshiba phone system).
So fixing in software, if possible, seems to be the most economical.

so why not install a fax modem on the second server and let it do it's own thing?

Hi,
I have a configuration where I have a shared fax on a Server 2003 SBS,
shared as "\\server\shared-fax". From all my client workstations, when I add
the shared fax, the fax client software is installed (Fax Console, etc) and
faxes send normally.
The problem is a second Server 2003 installation (a domain member), called
\\ACCOUNTING, running a accounting package where faxes are sent via the
accounting software. When a user wants to send a fax, the accounting software
stores the outbound fax in a SQL table. A process monitors that database,
polling every 2 minutes, a when a fax record appears, the fax is sent.
For this to work, I need to install the "Fax Client" software on the second
Server 2003. However, when I add the fax from the first server, the fax
server software is installed, including Fax Services Manager, and the
ACCOUNTING server now wants to function as a Fax Server. Since there is no
modem installed, Microsoft Fax generates an event log error and outbound
faxes do not work.
How do I force this second Server 2003 to function as a Fax Client and not a
Fax Server? Do I uninstall Fax Services Manager or do I somehow configure Fax
Services Manager to use a remote modem?
Unfortunately, using Fax Services from the workstation is not an option. The
outbound faxes must flow through the accounting server to pick up the client
fax number and other attachments that are included with the fax.
Thanks,
Murray
