Yes, the server and internet connection are in a different physical location. The DSL is through the same DSL provider that the ISP uses. The IP is a static IP that the ISP uses the MAC ID from the NIC to assign only that IP dynamically. About 4 years ago, they switched to this method. Before that I entered the static IP in the system. They caused a lot of heartburn then because there was no notification, it just stopped working one Monday.
This is from the Network Connection Details ( I had written it down) I will have to get a complete ipconfig /all and post it tomorrow. I'm nolonger at the location.
Physical Address 00-15-17-24-20-05
IP Address 216.193.185.54
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 216.193.185.1
DNS Server 216.193.128.11
69.72.0.2
At this point, I have 3 NICs in the machine (to prove a point) and if I connect a NIC that won't be assigned the static IP to the DSL modem, internet access is great, the exchange server will send email, just can't receive email and of course VPN and OWA do not work either.

So is your server and internet connection in a different physical location from where it was before the fire?
I'm still a bit unclear about this DSL setup...do you assign a public IP to the nic that's connected to the DSL modem? Or does it get an address dynamically?

We had a fire at the office, mostly smoke. I have had to move the server to
a temporary location. The original connection was via DSL. The server has 2
NICs, one for the DSL and the other for the office network. I have a static
IP from the ISP which uses the Physical Address to assign the static IP. The
modem is in passthrough, the IP address is assigned to the NIC. This has
been running for 4 or 5 years, faultlessly.
Once the new DSL via the same provider was connected, the server had no
internet connection. The LAN light on the DSL modem was blinking, so I
replaced the network card with a same manufacturer card. There was still no
internet connection, after discussion with the ISP they decided the DSL
modem failed. I took the modem to them, they checked it out and declared it
dead. I received a new modem, installed it, and after a phone call for some
setups and a reboot of everything, there was internet connection and I could
access the server OWA through a different internet connection for about 15
minutes and then it stopped. The server console had no internet access
either including the ISP's web site. And of course, no email service.
We decided that the 'NEW' NIC had failed and I replaced the NIC. The
Physical Address of the 'NEW NEW' NIC was put into their system and after it
filtered through their system we had internet connection for something like
15 minutes and then it stopped again.
I have gone through this process a third time and I know that the latest NIC
had internet connection for several hours before I allowed it to acquire the
static IP address. At that point because of the other items it was a couple
hours after their settings filtered through and there was no internet
access.
If the network card in the server is not a card that is assigned the static
IP address, it has internet connection. I have even placed the first NEW NIC
back in the server and it works, so it did not fail. If I connect a notebook
computer directly to the DSL modem there is internet access. When the NIC is
not the one to be assigned the static IP address, the IP address is a
generic one from their system. Of note, the Default Gateway and the Subnet
Mask is different when looking at the Static IP assignment and the
generically assigned IP address. I am going to call them about that and see
if it makes a difference on their system, etc, but I know they're tired of
talking to me and I'm tired of talking to them.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
