I believe in an attempt to help put your mind at ease, I oversimplified things on you. QB isn't stuck back in the 90's, nor does it have any particular "old fashioned" ways about it.

If you read this doc, it covers the *exact* scenario you are referring to (a host machine) and how the architecture works and should be set up.

*** Techarena webmaster: Why are these replies landing in this thread?
They are for a different thread I started on quickbooks, not DDNS.

Thanks for the replies.

Cliff: Yes I know QB is not a client server app yet, hence the posts
on the internet have many goofed up. QB reads and writes to the users
hard drive in some unique or old fashioned way and that makes it a poor
choice to install on mapped drives or so it says in the qb docs. It
sounds like it's stuck back in the smb peer networking days of the
1990's. I am debating letting a QB consultant do the install and take
the hit for the old design if the install borks.

Do the standard server side install to get the database manager
installed. There are one or more ports to open I believe, I don't
remember them but the QB kb or google should turn them up.

Thanks Les. I will install the 1 new user fresh per the QB docs and
the QB server manager and copy the data files to the server. (No I
wouldn't load QB on the server, duh) If that works I'll convert the
other user to the same config.

I'll post back with my experiences. It will be a few days.
