Re: HELP! Changing User from having data stored on server to back

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Sorry for the confusion.
1: I want to have the desktop user files (my documents, desktop, etc) moved
back to the desktop (c:\documents and settings\user name\my dcucuments, etc)
as if it was not on a domain network with files kept on server.
2: I want to utllize the server just as a std file server as if it was a
Windows Xp box on a Lan Workgroup for some "shared" company data that all
users can accces via mapping the shared folder as necessary. I do not want
the actual user profile kept on the server. There are only 5 users total with
no IT staff and I am trying to simplify there network so they can understand
what they have.

Your question seems inconsistent. In your first couple sentences, you say
you want to move back to a workgroup scenario where files are stored ON THE
DESKTOPS.

Then near the end, you are asking how to set up users so they can access
shared folders ON THE SERVER. So which is it? Do you want to keep files on
the server or move them to individual desktops??? It makes a significant
difference on the answer...

I have a client who had a server (60 days ago, Win Server 2003 SBS) setup
with all users logging into a domain and all data files stored (my
documents, desktops, etc) on the server. They want to go back to a std
workgroup setup with data files stored on the desktops. (I already have
there mail moved back to there pop host and off of exchange.) No offline
files, etc. the tech who set them up is no longer there or available. I do
have user names, passwords, server admin access. I was going to enable
offliine files to get the most recent data files back on the desktops and
then disable the remote data option on the user on the server but I am
concerned about what will happen when I try and log onto the user on teh
desktop localy and not via the domain. Would it be easier to copy there
data
to a storage folder, create a new local user and move the data to it and
then rename teh local user to match teh origional domain logon so I can
access shared folders on the server?
